Photopress 0.9.4
Sorry this release took so long. I should probably call it 1.0 RC1 or something, but it seems way too buggy for that right now.
New features and fixes:
- The main change in this version is a new categories table, which required a bunch of changes all over the place.
- Uses buttonsnap to add a pretty button to the RTE’s toolbar. This can be disabled if desired.
- A watermarking function contributed by Marcus. It worked in my quick test, but more testing is likely in order.
- The album layout now uses a styled unordered list instead of a table, ala Plogger. If you’ve customized your template you’ll need to do it again, but it should be much easier now.
Unfixed bug: My uncle, a regular source of odd test cases, found a bug in the resizing function. A large but well-compressed JPEG can cause a fatal error in the resizing function due to excessive memory usage. A fatal error leaves no way (as far as I can tell) to display a message or delete the offending image. This is very lame. I’m working on a way to check how much memory an image will use before attempting to resize it, and cancel the upload gracefully.
Download Photopress 0.9.4: photopress.zip OR photopress.tar.gz.
If this version sounds too buggy for your tastes right now, 0.9.2 is still available: photopress-092.zip OR photopress-092.tar.gz. Note that it’s possible to track down even older versions over at wp-plugins.org.

Hello,
thank you for making this plugin available!
After installation of the latest version, I do have an photo-album with the possiblity to upload images, but – at this time – the ‘insert image’ into posts function does not work.
When selecting an image in the Photopress-popup-window and clicking insert simply nothing happens…
Unfortunately the documentation does not say how the inserted tags should look like, and I am unable to deduce that information from the source code.
So, could you please give me a hint to either:
- what might be wrong with my installation, so that it does not allow me to insert images automatically into posts,
- how a typical photopress-tag should look like, so that I can try to at least manually insert images into my pictures?
TIA.

Hello, thank you for your great plugin! FWIW, I am experiencing a bug with 0.9.4. where:
if you upload a photo that is SMALLER than the MAX SIZE, Photopress rejects it.
this sounds similar to a bug somebody reported on the .0.7.2 thread.
I went ahead and uninstalled 0.9.4 and installed version 0.9.2., and now it appers to work just fine.
This bug is a problem becuz:
1 – in order to upload an image that is smaller than the max-image size, you have to either ENLARGE the small image, or REDUCE the max-image size
2 – a user can’t bypass the auto-resizing feature. Ideally, I’d like to set the max-image size to a ridiculous 3000px by 3000px – so that my untouched originals are what gets linked to via thumbnail, not a resized/recompressed copy. But as of now, when I do this I can’t upload ANY photos due to this bug
sorry if I’m missing something
Working good in 0.9.2., but thought you would want to know my experience with 0.9.4
thanks for the great plugin! I wish the Wordpress guys had collaborated with you instead of the half-assed photo uploading features in 2.0 ..

I’m getting multiple errors when attempting to view the photos within my categories. Please note that pictures are being loaded without issue when being randomly shown in the sidebar and/or as part of category listings. However, when entering the categories I get errors similar to the following:

Excellent! Thanks for continuing to develop this great plugin.
Is there any chance that in the future photopress will support adding images from webservers instead of having to download them to my computer individually and re-uploading them?
Thanks once again!

Hi! It’s me again with problems.
Got this error, upgrading from 0.9.2 to 0.9.4:
WordPress database error: [You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'ON (wp_photopress.catslug=wp_pp_cats.catslug) WHERE binary wp_photopress.catslug' at line 1]
SELECT * FROM wp_photopress JOIN wp_pp_cats ON (wp_photopress.catslug=wp_pp_cats.catslug) WHERE binary wp_photopress.catslug=’example’ ORDER BY imgtime DESC LIMIT 0,30
In Manage:Photopress the random image is displayed, but when I want to see the category I get that error.
I tried a Fix Categories with no luck. I won’t change anything more until I get a response from you, don’t want to break anything.
A question of usage, can we use a category within a category now?

Hi there!
I love the Photopress plugin!! Just installed it two days ago, and it really works like a charm. I have one feature suggestion: it would be great if clicking on the thumb would lead me to the bigger sized resized picture and then clicking on that one would bring up the original. Right now, when the original is there, clicking on the thumb will bring you right away to the big original pic. I guess that’s just a few lines of code to add (another “if” or so) but must admit I didn’t really study your code yet but rather thought to first contact you. If you don’t plan to add that feature I’d be grateful for a little note. If you do plan to add such a feature please also consider printing the text/watermark also on the original pic! Thanks a lot for your endeavours, and cheers,
Emanuel.

Hi – I am using your latest version of Photopress and love it.
One question regarding the catagories. How do you remove a catagory you no longer want listed? I have created a catagory called March 2006 ( I have hidden it ) – but I would like to remove it completely.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your time.

Hi
It sounds like Photopress is exactly what I need, but unfortunately I am getting the following error:
“Image not resized, is smaller than 400×400
Error uploading temple.jpg. Try resizing the image and try again.”
It is true that my image is smaller than 400×400, but some of images are smaller, some are bigger, so I don’t really think this should generate an error. In the options page, it says “maximum” resized image dimensions.
Can you let me know if it’s possible to upload a small image without getting the error?
Thanks!

Hey!
Can you please help me??? I am backpacking in Newzealand and Australia atm and planned to use photopress in my wordpress site.
However, when I try to add new pictures, the resizeing fails
what i do:
1. i upload all the desired pics in 640×480 to the wp-content\photos folder
and doesnt create any new thumbnails
2. i go2 inport photos – photos are added
3. install DB – goes fine as well
4. mass resize (in order to get the thumbnails) – this generates so much errors
maybe it has something to do with the big amount of pictures in the /photos folder, since i put all the pictures in this root folder.. is it possible to make a subfolder in there? or is there an other way to generate the thumbs? it worked before, but now there are more photos in the map, it doesnt anymore..
kind regards,
erik

hey there, thanks so much for a great plugin.
i’m wondering if there would be a way to either run two different installations of photopress, or set two sets of options for resizing/thumbnail creation. basically i’m trying to have a categorized gallery that is separate from the “blog proper”. essentially the blog is for personal photos and writing, where thumbnails would be larger and not cropped (one per post). the gallery is categorized photography which will eventually be available for purchase. these thumbs would be smaller and cropped square.
i couldn’t find a better place to ask this question, hope this is good…
thanks!

I fixed this problem, i was having the same issue with my wife’s photopress install. What i did was to modify the include.php and change JOIN to LEFT JOIN – better syntax i believe – and that resolved my problem.
Hope that helps you as well. I saw your comment and had to let you know this is what fixed it for me.

Insert a ‘else’ on line 277 like in exemple-1 below. What it does is that its writes ” instead of [nothing] in the onclick-string. It’s for the values that involves the original image, by default photopress doesn’t save originalsize and then doesn’t returnes something for these values, se exemple-2 below.

if (is_file($pp_options['photospath'] . ‘/’ . $pp_options['origprefix'] . $image['imgfile'])) {

Dear developers,
I am just preparing a website for relaunch, this time it is going to be based on Wordpress 2.0. I found the concept of Photopress very appealing, so I installed it. Now, my only problem is that every time I try to upload an image (from my Mac running under OS X and with Firefox 1.5) using the Photopress uploader I get this message:
“Error uploading imagename.jpg. The file is not one of the allowed types (jpg jpeg gif png). Check the file and try again.”
The same with any png or gif file. Updating to 0.9.4 did not help. The problem is obviously not with the file types, they are absolutely correct. What can I do? I would really like to use Photopress for my site.

Hi, I amd using WordPress 2.0. I just downloaded your latest version of Photopress. Works fine for uploading, and for including a just-uploaded photo into a post. But in selecting browse, to include another photo in a post, the window indicates a coding error in bottom left side, and although all the photos are shown with the various options, none of the “insert” buttons works when clicked. I’ve tried deactivating, then activating, no answer.
Would it be worthwhile uninstalling, then re-installing? If so, are there uninstall instructions?
thanks!

I’ve tried versions 0.92 and 0.94. What happens with both is:
1.) I upload a jpg image in the popup window
2.) Two jpg files end up in /wp-content/photos. One with the file name I specified, and the other with the prefix “orig_” appended to it. (In Options -> Photopress I configured photopress to save originals).
3.) But, after uploading on the popup window I get: “All images have been attempted to be uploaded, problems with each image are listed below”. And, no problems are listed.
4.) I click on the “Browse” tab on the photopress popup window, and it says “No images have been uploaded yet”.
So, I assume this thing is not working for me.

I went from 0.8.5 to 0.9.4, and it messed up the categories, resulting in both the album view and the ‘manage’ part being unusable. It displayed only a ‘default’ category, and selecting it displayed no images, only one single ‘red x’.
Reverting back to 0.9.2 solved the problem, so I guess I’ll be waiting for a new release

I have the random images in my sidebar, but I have it set to display 10 thumbs. It works perfectly well, but the images don’t seem to be truly random. They seem to stay organized in the column of 10 by the order I uploaded them, or the categories they are in.. haven’t pinned it down yet. You can check it out if you want.
Have you encountered this, or do you have a suggestion on a place to check?

Hello – Love the progress you’ve made so far.
A quick question about image sorting options – I’d love to be able to sort images by the date they were taken. Currently “old to new” etc seems to use image upload timestamp.
It seems this metadata must be stripped off the image and stored in the DB then accessed later for sorting? How can I switch which piece of metadata is used as the image time?
Thanks – well done…

Hi Isaac,
first of all: It’s an absloutely great plugin!!
But i discovered 2 severe bugs in 0.9.4:
1) When using the “Browse” tab in the Popup Window, the “Add Image” buttons are without any function. You can not add images which are still uploaded.
2) When you configured a maximum size of 800px and you want to upload an image with less than 800px on each side (should be easy
), you’ll get an error message that the pic was not resized. But the pic didn’t even upload. So, in this case you have to make your pics bigger, so that photopress can make them smaller. Hmmm…..
Any hotfixes (nightly builds) for this issues?

please contact me and i send you a localization of both Filez and Photopress in german language, maybe you want to provide them here.
I would also suggest to provide some “Users help Users” kind of a forum around here, as there are so many small questions coming up… and i dont want to bother you directly, as im thankful you provide the plugin for download.
I would suggest to:
a) Use a version of Ozh – Theme Manager (donno the exact name right now) to store options in an array in a single optiions field instead of using so many fields for kind of switches and markup things in the db…
I would appreciate if i may request some features, too
or maybe getting help in solving these. or at least provide some help or testing with development (though im not a programmer – so that help is limited).
.. if som1 else would like to see these features, too, of course…
a) an option to seperate different authors through …
b) capabilities – managed by WP-Role Manager Plugin – and …
c) an option that lets authors only see their own subfolders (eg. named after the author_nicename) what would also mean that their own subfolders would preferrably created by photopress on an authors first upload.
and finally d) an option to choose between the current “popup-mode” and an inline mode that would expand an empty div – using some fancy js-toggling effects and stuff … maybe – what in my opinion made things easier (because in one place). as i would prefer the imagename not being written into a posts content but into a custom field. (can this be done with the current version 0.94?)
with point c) being my most urgent need, i’m not sure if creating folders can be done in safemode=on environments, so please let me know if this would be “technically possible” to do. (same goes for point d – is this possible regarding GET and POST methods used, etc. ?)
kindly regards, and thanks for a great plugin! A lot of questions , i know, but i hope its helpful (at least for me
) or brings Photopress a step further (towards what i want it to be).

Also I’m having problems getting the thumbnails to render properly but that’s probably down to my awful CSS abilities.
Other than that, everything seems to be working great in this release for me!

Whenever I go to “Mass Edit” the categories all get reset. So, I have to go back through and change them all before I click on “Update”.

Hi there,
I’m using photopress in my new blog (www.txominadas.com) and it’s awesome, exactly what I needed. I have done a couple of modifications to display some information on the thumbnailed images and make categories look like folders.
It works perfect on localhost, but I can’t upload any picture to the server.
Sometimes I get the following error:
photopress Fatal error: Allowed memory size
and sometimes no error is displayed but image doesn’t upload.
What’s wrong?
